I'm runing YMN 0.9.1 in Firefox 1.5b2 right now and haven't seen the problems you are describing. First off you shouldn't get a "title-less popup window" asking for a username and password. The window that pops up should have a title of "Yahoo! Mail Login" and should have 2 checkboxes in addition to the username and password fields. The should then be 3 buttons in the window: "Login", "Delete" and "Cancel". The fact that you aren't seeing this would seem to indicate to me that you are running an older version of YMN. That or the popup window in question does not belong to YMN. Are you sure you are running my notifier (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1264) and not A's Yahoo Mail Notifier (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=470)? My suggestion is to redownload the extension and install it. If that doesn't work, try creating a new profile and see if it works there. If it works in a new profile and not your existing one then there is something else causing the problem. As for the issue with security. The Yahoo username and password is sent over a (AES-256 256 bit) encrypted https connection so it as secure as if you entered it into the https://login.yahoo.com page itself. --- HJ wrote: > just installed YMN on Firefox 1.5b2. when i start up, > i get a blank browser window with the little > title-less popup window asking for a username and > password. however, no matter what i type in, clicking > on "Login" doesn't work -- it just sits there. and > when i click "Cancel," i get an error message (which > reappears each time i click "OK", up to 3-4 times, > before it finally goes away for good). > > having played around with > installing/uninstalling/force quitting for a few > minutes i've gotten it to work, but it still seems to > have major hiccups for 1.5b2. > > sorry this report is a bit vague; if there are > specific things i can try which would help isolate the > problem, please post. > > -HJ > > p.s. is there any information about how secure the > password exchange is with YMN? i'm pretty sure there > is a way to do challenge-response with yahoo's > servers, so that the PW is not sent out in the clear, > but i cannot find any confirmation that this is what > is actually going on. if it isn't, then this extension > is rather dangerous to use in any public hotspot, etc. > in any case it would be good to know... > > > > __________________________________ > Yahoo! Sorry it isn't working for you. Let's run some tests. First off which version of the extension are you using? Second send yourself a test message and then check the following (companion feed) URL: http://update.companion.yahoo.com/slv/v4/not It should indicate if you have any new mail. If you are seeing new mail indications at the URL above (it will mention you have X new messages), please forward me what you are seeing. If that URL does not indicate you have new mail try this URL: http://uk.update.companion.yahoo.com/slv/v4/not If that URL works, you can make the extension use that URL by going to "about:config" and finding the preference "extensions.ym_notifier.alternate-server" and change the value to "true". If neither URL works then you are having an issue with Yahoo! itself and the extension won't work until Yahoo fixes it. A handful of people have reported this problem and I'm not sure why it doesn't work for these small number of people. You can try installing the Firefox Yahoo! toolbar (http://toolbar.yahoo.com) and/or Yahoo! companion (http://companion.yahoo.com). I've seen instances where doing so can get the URL above working since they both use the same companion feed that this extension does. If nothing else works try contacting Yahoo! and tell them the new mail indication isn't working in their Toolbar or Companion programs. Did you have a prior version installed or was this a fresh install. Also have you tried installing the extensions into a new profile? I've found that the Mozilla Suite does not like having the extension reinstalled on top of itself. My advice would be to create a new profile and see it if works, if not then I will probably need a copy of your profile to diagnose the problem. The extension uses cookies to login the user after the initial login and therefore does not verify the password in all instances so what you are seeing is "normal". I intend to change this in a future version so the user won't have to verify his/her password. Screenshots attached. The first is what I see when I initially launch FF. I apologize if my wording was imprecise before???what I meant by "title-less" is that it is not a free-floating window with a title, but rather something that drops down from just below the title bar of the existing window. In any case, when I type in my password and click on "Login" (or hit return???I tried both, with identical results), the arrow cursor changes to the usual arrow with a miniature black-and-white "beachball" below it (indicating, I assume, that it is waiting for a response from the Yahoo server), and then it just sits there. I waited several minutes before finally hitting "Cancel," after which the browser continues normally to my homepage. The issue does not appear to be with my Yahoo login, since I can log in directly from http://mail.yahoo.com without any problems (as is evident from the fact that I'm posting from there). If there's anything you'd like me to try, please let me know. TIA, HJ __________________________________ Yahoo!
