[Vimperator] How do I select text?

I am sorry, but when I press i, I just get a visualbell. Is there an option
to enable before? I double checked the help and I browsed the wiki, without
finding relevant informations. Maybe I misunderstand what is caret mode?
(That's once I've pressed escape, isn't it?)
