Definitly, maybe you middle click at the wrong position? If you middle
click in the content, it always opens in the current tab, but if you
middleclick in the opened :tabopen prompt text field, and then press
enter, it should open in a new tab.

If you just want to open the url which currently is in your X11
selection in a new tab, use "P" instead.
