Nice ideas. 

The thing which irritates me in the new hint system is, that I don't
know how much I have to type. It's a bit of a feeling of uncertainness,
when typing the characters. If it would be possible to only highlight
the characters which need to be typed. But that's probably too much
computational overhead, to be fast enough.

That's very reasonable.

It's not the bahavior which I dislike, but the visualization. But
perhaps only a change to a unobtrusiver color is sufficient.
