[Vimperator] Wooho! Gmail problem alleviated

I am amazed at all this talk about vimperator and gmail. How is it
working for all of you? Having to push the 'I' key is the least of my
problems. First of all, quick hints are broken if using Firefox 2.x
(which I am), which means the mouse is still essential. Second, there
are the pernicious focus problems that I've mentioned before on this
list: vimperator motion keys are often unresponsive until I press 'I',
hit <TAB>, and then hit <ESC>. But I've found it's worse than this
because sometimes it is necessary to hit <TAB> more than once to get
things working. I know this may involves bugs in the gmail interface,
but it still renders vimperator almost useless for gmail, in my
opinion, since there is some non-determinism in the effects of
keystroke sequences.
And while I'm on that topic, I'd also like to mention that I find any
timing-related non-determinism very disturbing (e.g., quick-hints mode
on page loading, loading more than one link in full-time quick-hints
mode). If I understand correctly, a primary goal of vi was to make
editing on slow terminals much easier, since it is feasible to
continue performing edits without waiting for the terminal to respond.
Of course, if there is any non-determinism in the effect of
keystrokes (especially timing-related), the whole concept is
shattered. Is it fundamentally impossible to avoid timing dependency
in a FF plugin? Or does it just require more engineering (e.g., a
better keystroke buffering mechanism)?
