[Vimperator] How to use .vimperatorrc

I've seen the examples in the sample rc file, but what will I do with
other keybinding changes? Can I e.g. copy the definitions from
commands.js and write in my own keys, and that is that? That seems to
be what the two examples do, only some of the elements are emptied
out.
That's where I've been stopped in my tracks so far - what to remove,
if anything, etc. 
I've managed so far by changing the definitions in commands.js, and
that has worked fine (highly unauthorized, I suppose, but as long as
it works...), but with the frequent updates, it would be very nice not
to have to go through the revisions every time.
