I can't get it to work really.

but, does it happen to be about the same, as when you open the
bookmarks.html file itself?

e.g. in ~/.mozilla/firefox/idadfaf.default/bookmarks.html

looks like: http://calmar.ws/tmp/books.png 

?

That would indeed be also somekind of solution even without your
extension.
