Well, you're talking about normal find-as-you-type, we all know that
this has limitations. However, my idea is, if you have 3 links with
name:
"More", the first one will have "Mo"  as the hint (shown with a yellow
background), the second "or", the third "re" - the advantage is, that it
is shown directly inline.

If there is a forth "More" link we still have to chose an abritraily
string for the hint, but most links can be rendered inline like in:

It makes the display much smoother than with the current implementation.

If i ever come (and i hope so) to fully implement this hints, a custom
option for the hintchars does not make sense, I am afraid.
