Numbers are the vim way, i've not seen a mode like you suggest in vim
(by default at least).

My main problem with :b is that you get an extra list but don't see the
tab number/or key at the place where it makes sense - directly over the
tab.

Anyway, this is not big priority unless I receive a patch.
