The only comment I have right now is that you might want to add a list of deliverables and milestones to the site in addition to the proposal. An example of a possible deliverable for your project would be to have a Vietnamese version of Firefox posted on the Firefox download page by the end of the program. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/all I'm now subscribed to the project list, so if there's anything you'd like to ask me or if I can help with anything, send it to the list and I'll reply. First of all, it looks like Tran Minh Quan has been working on a Firefox 1.1 localization for some time, and has already filed a bug for CVS access [1]. There is also a request for CVS access by Cong Chinh Nguyen [2], but they don't seem to have translated anything yet. Should I get in touch with them about my project? I hadn't realized until today that someone may be actively working on the same thing. This could be a big problem for me, since Google isn't allowing me to collaborate with anyone (other than my mentor, of course), but Quan could have enough work done that there's no chance of me taking over or anything. Also, it looks like they're planning to branch for 1.1 around now, and according to Axel Hecht, there's a possibility that they won't accept new localizations after that happens. So it looks like my translation might have to remain unofficial, probably until the end of the SoC program this summer. I'll post something about this to the summer@mozdev.org list. As for your project, I'd recommend getting in touch with the people you mentioned and see if they are still working on their projects. It's possible that they are no longer involved and you can take over. It's also possible that we can modify your deliverables slightly based on what other people are doing. If Tran is working on localizing Firefox 1.1, you could work on Firefox 1.0.4 or you could localize Thunderbird or the Mozilla Suite. My thought would be that they wouldn't expect people in the community to create binaries since this requires a lot of infrastructure. We can also talk to developers of other localization projects on the project owners list or the other people doing localization work for the Summer of Code to see if they know the answer to this. Thanks for the heads-up! It's great to see so much activity around Vietnamese localization work in the community. If there are already active Firefox translation efforts going on, I think working on Thunderbird sounds like a great idea. Apparently it's intended for a file called "WalletConcatenation.xul," but, strangely enough, that file doesn't exist in LXR. Since I'm absolutely clueless as to what it's used for and what it means, I have no way of translating it. If anyone knows who to ask, or whether I should even go ahead and leave that section as is, please let me know. It's based on Thunderbird 1.5a2, which will probably have few string differences with the upcoming beta. You can get the .xpi by following the enormous link at , and the .jar at . The .xpi package isn't working well with Thunderbird right now, and I'm currently trying to figure out why -- I'm new to Firefox/Thunderbird 1.5's extension format (the last extension I created was for 0.7 or so). However, if you rename $FIREFOX_HOME/chrome/en-US.jar temporarily, download my .jar file into that directory, and rename it en-US.jar, it should work just fine. The package is actually only about 75% complete. Most aspects of Thunderbird that you'll encounter have been translated, though, with the exception of some preference panels. Because my approach was to translate the entire package in order, using a plaintext editor with a built-in Vietnamese IME, not skipping any files along the way, I ended up translating many an unused .dtd or.properties file -- these could go towards a localization of Firefox or SeaMonkey, though. I would be much more complete with my project, except that I had many relatives in New Orleans when Katrina hit, and we were kind of busy trying to get in touch with them this week, since we didn't know if any of them had evacuated. I think we've just accounted for all of them now, thank goodness, but between Sunday and Wednesday, I didn't make much progress at all. After rushing for a couple hours last night, I have the .jar file up on the server now so you can take a look, and I'll try to get the .xpi working by tonight hopefully. Earlier in the project, I had to revise my project's goal for two reasons: there were already a few efforts (some possibly ongoing) to translate Firefox into Vietnamese. To avoid any conflict with their projects, I switched to translating Thunderbird. In addition, just as I was beginning, I read a comment at Bugzilla by Axel Hecht, stating that they "would like to land new locales" by the time they branched for 1.5. (They branched on the 13th .) I didn't communicate all that much with my mentor, David Boswell, since my project was more linguistic than code. I am grateful to him that he stood by, ready to help, and posted the occasional comment to vi's mailing list or my blog, making sure that things were working out alright. Despite these small hitches, I'm very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work on the Summer of Code. It was the motivation I needed to finally do a translation for the Mozilla project, and it gave me a chance to work with CVS, which I had never done before. In the near future, I plan to finish translating the entire package, correct the occasional error, and make my project website helpful for Vietnamese speakers interested in Thunderbird. Later on, I intend to work on integrating a Vietnamese IME into Thunderbird, which would make it easy for Vietnamese speakers to write in their own language (somewhat necessary, I figure). In short, I don't plan on stopping with the end of SoC. (For those who care, I also submitted an independent status report for July: .) -- Minh Nguyen AIM: trycom2000; Jabber: mxn@myjabber.net; Blog: http://mxn.f2o.org/ --------------050205040508030301000206 Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=utf-8; name="mxn.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="mxn.vcf" begin:vcard fn;quoted-printable:Minh Nguy=E1=BB=85n n;quoted-printable:Nguy=E1=BB=85n;Minh org:Stanford University adr:;;;Stanford;California;94305;United States email;internet:mxn@zoomtown.com title:Freshman note;quoted-printable:AIM screen name: trycom2000=0D=0A= Jabber ID: mxn@zoomtown.com=0D=0A= =0D=0A= Known at Wikipedia as: [[User:Mxn]]=0D=0A= Known on Adobe Atmosphere as: minger=0D=0A= =0D=0A= Weblog URL: http://mxn.f2o.org/ x-mozilla-html:FALSE url:http://www.stanford.edu/ version:2.1 end:vcard --------------050205040508030301000206--
