Subject: [Synckolab] vcard mime type bug?
Message-ID: <48EF16A8.20706@hard-wired.co.uk>
I am having difficulties syncing contacts with an IMAP server
(Communigate). The server cannot interpret the vCard mime type used by
synckolab in the message header ie Content-Type: text/vcard. The same
issue occurs in Thunderbird when reading contacts pulled off the server.
It looks like this is a bug in contactTools.js. The correct mime type
(as used elsewhere in the code) is text/x-vcard.
Can you verify and correct?
Thanks,
Duncan

Subject: [Synckolab] SyncKolab to Communigate Pro
Message-ID: <48EFCD5C.9000008@hard-wired.co.uk>
I expect you will be familiar with the Communigate Pro (CGP) messaging
server. It is a significant commercial product with approx 12,000
customers and 140 million end users. Many CGP customers have a
preference for Thunderbird as a mail client and are actively seeking a
solution to share Thunderbird contacts with the IMAP server (in order
that they may also be accessed via webmail).
As a member of the CGP mailing list I know that a number of
people have tested synckolab as a possible solution but given up on
it. It seems it ought to provide what we need, so I have been delving a
bit deeper to try and understand why it doesn't work. There appear to
be 2 issues:
1> the mime type specified in the message header that is delivered to
the IMAP server is incorrect. Synckolab specifies text/vcard whereas
the correct form is text/x-vcard. I have addressed this point in a
separate email since I think it is a typographical error in the code
and can be corrected as a bug.
2> the IMAP message headers contain 'unexpected' data as follows:
- Provided by synckolab - Expected by CGP (IMAP server)
From: user email address Empty from field
To: synckolab at no.tld Primary email of contact
Subject: vCard pas-id-.... Full name of contact
I am guessing that fixing this, so that the IMAP server gets its
expected header content, would be a fairly easy change to synckolab. In
order not to break other implementations, perhaps it could be done by
providing parameterisation of the message headers through Thunderbird's
advanced options panel.
I think that there is an opportunity here for you to extend the reach of
synckolab into a very significant user base with a comparatively small
enhancement. Although to gain acceptance by those responsible for
1000's of users this would need to include a commitment to ongoing
support of Thunderbird<->CGP sync implementations.
Is this something you would consider?
Thanks,
Duncan

since its already available in tbird... maybe write a bug (enhancement)
for this so i dont forget it

Hi,
The content type header can be considered a bug - with the rest: I would
have to add an option for compatibility:
Some Kolab1 Clients seem to need it the way its done right now. I would
need to add an option in config to allow selection of:
* kolab1 compatible VCARD
* Communigate compatible VCard
* (probably): vcard as attachment (unless communicate can work with a
vcard attachment)
You could add an enhancement bug in bugzilla - when I have time I can
add this (kinda busy right now... )

The company for which i am working would be interested in sponsoring the
implementation synckolab encryption but with s/mime .
How complex it could be?

Trying to install SyncKolab plugin results in the error message
"Sync Kolab 1.0.0 could not be installed because it is not compatible

Is there anything I can do to install SyncKolab?
Thanks in advance,

Forget it. I should install it in Thunderbird/Icedove.

Hi,
SyncKolab is a great idea, because all you need to host your addresses
is a IMAP account. I use it with my local Thunderbird and also with my
moile Thunderbird on a USB-Stick. But unfortunately I have more address
books. For example on the iPhone....
I was searching for a firefox sync tool for the windows address book to
update my mobile phone when I found SyncKolab. But of course it would be
much better if the iPhone could synchronize the addresses from a IMAP
folder instead of the Windows adresse book... ;)

Message-ID: <48FD78B1.6000203@kolab.technoforge.de>
Hi together,
I use Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 with SyncKolab 1.0.1 (nightly build on
19.08.2008 12:20) and Kontact 1.2.9
If I create a contact-item in Kontact, the business-phone goes to
in the xml-file on the server.
SyncKolab seem to map the field incorrectly into thunderbird-adressbook,
because it's empty in TB after sync.
vice versa: a contact created in TB has it's business-phone in
, which is recognized by Kontact.
Has anybody an idea how to tell Kontact to store the business-phone into
or tell SyncKolab that -data should also go into
the businessphone-field?
Thanks for comments.
Best wishes from South Germany :-)

I've read previous posts on this list and so upgraded to nightly build
(1.0.1 19-08-2008 12:20). I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (20080914).
Any suggestion what I do to fix this error? Thanks in advance.

I took a look at it and I can confirm it. I checked if I accidently
overwrote some stuff, but it seems all variables are fine. It also didnt
seem to hinder the sync progress in any way (tough I didnt test ALL
possible combinations). I wcan only ignore this for now and see whats
going on with the next lightning release.
If anyone has a hint on whats going on, i am open for patches :P
