For your setup, if you have some local network that is directly on your filesystem, you should be able to just select the appropriate slogger folder and you'd be all set. Or maybe each of your computers can just save the history on a local drive, and then you can have some script zip them up every night/week/etc and move them to some common location. Its been nice since I started using sessionsaver but it messes up sometimes. it would be better if the laptops (one window,s one Debian) could submit directly to my www domain. Then script a FTP session to pull it into the LAN. I will keep pluging away and see what I can come up with. This would allow one to exclude the post reply page on a web forum while allowing one to have a private archive of the forum oneself, for example. And I'd just like to say that slogger and Mac OSX's spotlight is a fantastic combination. :) Firefox 1.0.7, Slogger 0.5.11 Rory McCann From kschutte at MIT.EDU Fri Nov 25 02:28:20 2005 From: kschutte at MIT.EDU (Ken Schutte) Date: Fri Nov 25 02:28:56 2005 Subject: [Slogger] Do not log for URL matching pattern? I really like the idea behind Slogger (I save *everything*), and have found it useful a few times in remembering things that I wouldn't have been able to remember otherwise, but it is slowing down my computer A LOT. Every time I load a page, it freezes for several seconds. I think it gets worse with time (maybe getting better at the beginning of each month? We'll see...) Is there anything that could be done to improve this? I wonder if it is the log file or the data files that is slowing it down. 2. It saves a lot of redundant data. I wish there were a way to compress the files that it saves. I might try using NTFS's file compression, but I fear that would just make it even slower. 3. I set it to save HTML only, but it saves anything that I access with an address, so if I say "view image", and it shows the image's URL in the address bar, it saves the image, too. I just want to save the text-based information from the pages I visit. No images or movies or whatever. 4. It keeps giving me this interrupting modal window error "The link could not be saved. The web page might have been removed or had its name changed." I'd really like to turn that off, as it interrupts my work for no real reason, but I don't see an option. Turning it into an ignorable notification window or status bar icon would be much better. 5. Also, I would like to be able to filter more powerfully. For instance, filtering "google.com" currently makes it ignore google.com, but not www.google.com. Ideally, this or "*.google.com" would make it ignore all such incarnations without having to type them in, such as print.google.com, images.google.com, and so on. Maybe even better like filtering "*.google.com/search?q*", so I can filter out searches but still slog other parts of their site. Otherwise, good job. I really want to keep using it. I've noticed this too. I'm going to write a bash shell script that will compare new files to all existing files in the data/ directory and delete it if it's a duplicate. It'll then gzip all files. I will have to write a plugin for MacOSX's Spotlight so that it can search inside .gz files, I haven't found an existing one. This would mean I would have the advantages of searching through all the pages I've visited and minimizing the needed space.
