I'm using v1.3.6, and I didn't have any problem loading the feed at all. 
Are you referring to v1.3.6 or v1.4beta?

There's only one thing I'm not getting - is there a reason to have the 
titles encapsulated within <![CDATA[...]]>?

I guess it is something in the parsing. But the thing is I can't "see"
what is returned by feeds.feedburner.com since it is gzip encoded (yes,
I tried spying with a tcpdump).
