I guess I should've been more precise.
I have the Sage sidebar enabled at all times. Since
Firefox retrieves all the live bookmarks when the tree
appears, that retrieval time goes towards my startup
time.
The slowdown was caused by retrieving all the feeds at
the same time, plus the additional time it requires to
process them. The trigger of the slowdown was
displaying the Sage sidebar that contains all
"feedurl". In any cases, I'm now curious in how big a
difference there is. So I did a test.
There're 355 feeds in my folder (I know I've said
around 100 before. I guess I made a mistake because I
only actively scan around 100 of them everyday.) With
only one of them as "feedurl", my startup time for
Firefox is 13secs (maybe faster on your computer -
mine is a few years old.)
But with all the feeds as "feedurl", Firefox's startup
time jumps to 1min 3secs. The private bytes used by
Firefox in each case are 17.4Mb and 25.8Mb
respectively.
I doubt there're anyone who reads all the feeds they
stored everyday. Why waste the time and the bandwidth
to download them all?

Sorry, couldn't help you there. I have never tried
reading the source from the CVS repository. I just
open up their JAR and go from there.
I'm sure the developers are paying attention to the
mailing list, so they might include additional
features in the next version.
There's also a wiki for features request, among other
things - http://sage.wikicities.com/wiki/Main_Page
