Thanks of the advices. Will look into them, but will probably take some time for me to fully understand how it differs from my "normal" javascripting :)

I can confirm that creating a custom XPCOM component is, initially, a pain in the back. But once you
"get it", it's paradise. I tried to keep my component's source code easily-readable. You might like
to check out enigform's source code (http://enigform.mozdev.org).
