Well, I use both vhosts and mod_alias, and not mod_rewrite.

In fact, I achieved the level of URL noise reduction equivalent to 
http://drupal.mozdev.org/ (blog is gone also). And that was a bit 
tricky. In this context, '/drupal/blog' and just '/blog' look the same 
for me.
