Maybe I wasn't very clear in my earlier message, but I wanted to get a
discussion going here among the project owners as a first step in
formalizing our adoption policy. I thought that would be better than
coming up with a formal policy behind the scenes and then presenting it
as a done deal to this group.
Scott, you've made your point about how you think an adoption policy
should work and that will be taken into consideration. We'll also take
into consideration everyone else's opinion about how this should work.
If the project owners as a whole can't reach consensus on this, then
the admins will act in good faith to come up with a formal policy that
best fits the needs of the community.
We have been running the site for almost 7 years and we have not had an
issue with handing owner project ownership until now. In most cases
the owner really has abandoned a project and can't be found or the
owner has been willing to either hand over a project or work with a new
developer. I think it will be the rare case where a new project will
need to be created based on a fork of a different project's code.
