There is normally no impact on the code in the extension.  An extension 
does not normally care where it is installed.

For example, Calendar Help recommends this method for cases where the 
extensions manager is broken.  Calendar Help's code does not need to 
detect where it is installed or use different code--the same code works 
whichever way the extension is installed.

There is no "global profile".  The profile is always the user's current 
profile.    You can still use files in the user's current profile in the 
normal way.

You can always get to a file in the extension itself by using a chrome URL.

Perhaps you can find out more about what fails, and post the details here.

This feature is important for users who often create new profiles, 
because they can avoid installing their extensions over and over.
