Further, my default font is Mangal, 14.
Fonts for Devanagari are
proportional Serif,14
Serif Mangal
Sans-serif Mangal
Monospace Mangal,11
Maximum font size, none
allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selection above is 
ticked.
Character encoding, default cahr encoding Unicode (UTF-8)

I wonder whether it helps in diagnosing.
