I should try reading
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_engines_disappear_from_Search_Bar
and see if that resolves the problem...

If not please let us know old and new version numbers and whether you have
any working search engines.
(I can confirm that 1.5.0.3 does work with Mycroft Search Engines - well for
me anyway)

Today I downloaded the latest update from Firefox and I find that I am
unable to add Firefox Search Engines,and I have not had any problems before
