Message-ID: <4964EBD8.7080203@amadzone.org>
Hello,
Mozilla Archive Format version 0.9.0 is now officially available
for download at .
This version is experimental (not included in automatic updates)
and provides several enhancements over MAF 0.8.7. The new user
interface is also integrated more tightly with Firefox.
MAF 0.9.0 has the following significant improvements over MAF 0.8.7:
* Integration with the Save Complete extension
().
* Ready for compatibility with the UnMHT extension
().
* Compatibility with the Title Save extension
().
* Improved browser integration when loading and saving archives.
* Several other modifications and bugfixes. For details, see
.
The following issues are known to exist in MAF 0.9.0:
* If the first entry of an archive is not a web page, but for
instance an image, it cannot be displayed when opening the
archive normally.
* If an archive contains multiple pages, refreshing the tab
displaying the first one may cause the other pages to be opened
again in new tabs.
* The download progress indication is not accurate when saving an
archive.
* When saving a page in an archive fails, retrying the download from
the Downloads window does not achieve the expected result.
* A secondary download progress bar is shown when saving a single
page in an archive.
* The Save Complete component doesn't always work when saving
multiple tabs in an archive.

I have to say that there are a few problems when i use the maf 0.9.0. Integration with the Save Complete extension is good idea but it also make me annoying. when i save a page i have displayed the page in firefox completely. it is mean that the page has been downloaded completely but if you want to save it the progress is retrying dowload from the downloads window. It's more worse!if you disconnect the internet some temp file can't be saved and pop-up many message windows. choosing using old version is my favor

Another question! exactly, when you download a page it can't be downloaded quickly because of buffer files. But you can choose work offline to save time in firefox. Today I found that it did't work in maf 0.8.7! so why? maf is a better extension i have used. Thanks to Paolo Amadini

Hi list!
As the subject suggests, I'm trying to open mht files in ff3 on linux.
I noticed on the website that the ff3 extension is not an official
release -- What functionality can I expect from it? I'm really only
needing to view mhtml files that my computer illiterate instructor has
posted online, but the current plugin isn't recognizing them. Is there
addition set up required, or is the plugin not to this point yet?
Thanks,
Dave

Hello hogsonik,
thank you for your valuable feedback, it's very useful for me to know
how MAF is used in the real world. I tried to reproduce the problems
you reported by following this procedure:
* Connect to the Internet
* Start Firefox and open http://maf.mozdev.org/index.html
* Tick File -> Work Offline
* Disconnect from the Internet
* Click File -> Save Page As...
* Select "Web Archive, MAFF zipped", then Save.
I tried with the following versions of MAF:
* 0.8.7 with the browser's save component selected
* 0.9.0 with the "Save Complete" component selected
* 0.9.0 with the browser's save component selected
Everything worked fine, except when I tried version 0.9.0 with
the "Save Complete" component; in that case, the download window
hung (however, no message boxes appeared). Using the standalone
"Save Complete" extension seemed to work; maybe it's a bug in the
download progress bar integration, I'll investigate.
In the meantime, I think you should be able to use MAF 0.9.0 with
the "Save Complete" component disabled from the preferences window.
Let me know if this answers your question.
Regards,
Paolo

Hi Dave,
if you only need to view MHTML files from the Internet, I recommend
you use the UnMHT extension (http://www.unmht.org/unmht/en_index.html),
since it has better MHTML support than MAF, and MAF for the moment
cannot open archives from remote locations anyway.
However, if you need to save pages locally, I'd recommend using the
MAFF format rather that MHTML; to create MAFF archives, you can use
Mozilla Archive Format 0.9.0 (experimental, but compatible with the
latest version of UnMHT) or MAF 0.8.7 (official stable version,
but causing problems with UnMHT).

I tried Maff 9 on all four of my platforms (WinXP, OS/2, Ubuntu Linux,
and OS X). I had to revert to 8.7 because of the following problems:
My test MAFF has 9 tabs from five sites saved in the following numbers
1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1
[1] The file saves under WinXP and opens properly in eComStation and OS
X (did not try Linux). With WinXP it stalls while opening. When I
cancel, I find that it only opened one page from each site. The error
was in the creation of the index files.
[2] On one site (www.biblegateway.com) MAFF 9 refuses to save, stating
an index error. MAFF 8.7 saves the site, but on OS X interprets the
saved file as a video.
I tested with all save options.

Hi Phil,
thanks for your accurate testing! Unfortunately I was not able to
reproduce the problems on my system. When I tested MAF 0.9 on Windows
XP I created a MAFF file with a lot of pages, all from the same site,
and both loading and saving worked correctly. With a few tabs from
different sites everything seems fine too.

I don't understand, what kind of error did you experience exactly? Did
you see a specific message in the Error Console?

Did you try an ordinary save on the same sites?
The only thing that comes to my mind now is that there might be a
problem while saving the pages in the temporary directory. Please try
to set the temporary directory in the advanced preferences to an
existing empty directory on your system, and let me know if the
problem persists.

My test MAFF was one which I use weekly from the same sites.

I have since tried Linux and the file opened correctly.

Where is the error console? It was an error message. And, I looked at
the temp files and saw the missing index files as well.

Sorry. This should have included that the operating system was OS/2. I
have posted info about this the OS/2 developers site for Firefox. The
problem exists with MAFF 8.7 as well, but the files open correctly on
WinXP and Linux. It was index error with MAFF 9 that index problem
might be the source of the problem.

You can open the Error Console from the Tools menu, or Ctrl+Shift+J in
the English Firefox. After an anomaly occurs, an error message usually
appears there. You can copy any message to the clipboard by
right-clicking on it and selecting Copy.
> It was an error message. And, I looked at

Can you please try the save again and post the exact error message text,
as well as the copy of any other message appearing in the Error Console
after the save failed?
Please try with the browser's standard save system, not the other
save components for the moment.
