Just a sidenote: vufind catalogues have a similar problem. They do not
really exit gracefully if they get a : passed in the search query. They
use the (silly) logic to have

        fielddelimiter: searchvalue

E.g.

        PER:Miller and TIT:Something

Would issue an author/title search there.

Its "very funny" if you search for usual literature like

        Study of X : the case of Y

In the vufind case replacing : with a space would probably be more to
the point than just stripping it given the above
Miller/Something-example. However, the basic problem of the silly syntax
persists and it would return no result.
