From carl at betterbilling.net Tue Jun 1 15:57:25 2004 From: carl at betterbilling.net (Carl Tanner) Date: Tue Jun 1 17:12:02 2004 Subject: [Jabberzilla] jabberzilla progress Message-ID: <40BCEDB5.7050901@betterbilling.net> To be honest, if you looked for progress of developing the Jabberzilla client lately, you would not find much. A while back, Eric Murphy announced a rebirth of the project, and many people started discussion on where it should go and what it should do, but there was more talk than writing of code. prefiks, the author of JIM ( http://jim.mozdev.org ), and I did a private chat this weekend about JIM. Specifically, we started to gather documentation so that others can better understand how to use it as a client, and as working base code for developing other jabber clients. Over the weekend I tried several functions of JIM and they work fine. IIRC, Eric mentioned that he wanted to use JIM code as the base for the new Jabberzilla. I saw the homepage for julia.mozdev.org and the logo looks impressive. I just hope that the client is as good as the graphic. Maybe the author has great code. I don't know since he has not released any yet. JIM works now. You can log into your favorite server TODAY. Here is the latest xpi created over the weekend: prefiks.civ.pl/temp/jim-pre0.1(20040526).xpi Take it out for a spin and let me know what you think. It's time to rise up out of the bleachers, come down to playing field, and get into the game. See a bug? Let everyone else know. Got a great idea? Let us all in on it. It's game time! Let's go! I remember Eric saying that he wanted to throw his support behind JIM. It seems to have a better chance of being workable soon. It's also good to know that JIM is still a live project! I was a bit worried when the website showed no changes since August 2003... -- GuruJ. Jabberzilla will be available now in Portuguese, Polish, and English, ala United States. The translation will be commited by this time next week. Also to be comitted to the new Jabberzilla by this time next week: * Plays nice with Firefox 0.9rc as an extension * A couple other nice surprises So come on by the development site and check out the new code at jabberstudio.org ( http://www.jabberstudio.org/projects/jim/releases/ ). If you have any questions, any ideas on what could be done to improve the client, or, better yet, if you have code to improve the client, let me or prefiks know on this mailing list or visit the chat room, jabberzilla@conference.jabber.org. [19:50:58] ... [20:06:07] i think it depends on who you're targetting [20:08:04] but if i could offer you one general tip: the client should feel responsive [20:08:12] this is important with network apps [20:09:35] so even if you're waiting for a reply, the user should be aware of this. [20:09:58] also, ensure to enable/disable widgets as appropriate, for example of something is not supported or if you're waiting for something to process [20:10:52] in other words, present a client that "feels" solid to the user. Works quite well! I blogged about it here: http://www.saint-andre.com/blog/2004-06.html#2004-06-15T16:07 Note well that Thomas Muldowney and I have moved the "JIM" code and docs to the Jabberzilla site on JabberStudio: http://jabberzilla.jabberstudio.org/ This move was done with the approval of Eric Murphy, with whom I chatted several days ago. Eric has blessed the work that carlb, prefiks, and others are doing (at least in conversation with me) and I must say that these early releases bode well for the future. Good work! I've asked Eric to post to this list acknowledging transfer of project control, and hopefully he will have a chance to do that soon. Onward and upward! Amazing huh? :-) The new owners are carlb and prefiks (from jim.mozdev.org). I am sure they will be posting to this list soon. The project is being moved to http://jabberzilla.jabberstudio.org/ I do not know if they are going to start a new mail list or use this one. Anyway I hope to help out on the project when I have some spare time, so I will still be around. I had wished that we could have had a mirrored project site on mozdev.org to take advantage of some bugzilla and some of the other great resources that it has to offer, including this mailing list, but I don't want be modest in the demands that this project puts on the mozdev.org server. This mailing list is great, and it doesn't put much more of a load on the mozdev.org server. At this time, prefiks and I would like to thank Eric Murphy and Peter Saint-Andre, and several other at jabber.org for their enthusiastic support for the project. The new home page of the reborn jabberzilla is and will be http://jabberzilla.jabberstudio.org . The website needs some help and so does the code, but hey, every newborn needs to walk before it can run. On the plus side the code is released in an xpi ( http://www.jabberstudio.org/projects/jabberzilla/releases/ ), and for a 0.1 release, jabberzilla has a lot to offer: * Firefox 0.9 ready * Very stable * Decent GUI * Deep library of functions * Code debugging window * Jabber XML debugging window * Roster that makes chatting with friends a breeze * Multi-language support in not only English, but Polish and Portuguese Coming up: * Groupchat features * jabberzilla will be an extension for Thunderbird /and/ for Firefox * Better user and developer documentation Also, I am sure that the creative bunch like yourselves can find some very cool gee-whiz features for jabberzilla (jz) that would "take it to the next level." We sure would like to hear them. Please post them at http://www.jabberstudio.org/projects/jabberzilla/features/ and let's start a discussion. Here's the first one I will throw out: Should jz include rss/xml/nntp feeds and blogs like the ones offered from pubsub.com? Should jz have the capability to directly connect, without polling, to servers like pubsub.com? There is a lot of discussion currently on the possibilites offered from combining "real-time" publishers with IM. What do you all think? Let me know on this mailing list or swing by the public conference room, jabberzilla@conference.jabber.org , or post your comments to the feature request at http://www.jabberstudio.org/projects/jabberzilla/features/view.php?id=3887 . Let's fire up the "real-time Internet." No. imo JabberZilla should facilitate *other* extensions in getting jabber support. Otherwise you run the risk of code bloat. I'll second that: Unix "Small Tools" philosophy looks for simple, easy to manage, easy to debug, loosely coupled components; each does it's thing well and it only does that thing.
