quirksmode.org, section javascript -> events is a very good online resource.
While the presently available edition of David Flanagan's book
Javascript: the Definitive Guide is getting a bit dated, it is still
the best all-round paperbound resource on javascript tech, AFAIK.
Stirrings at David's blog hint there might be a later edition in the
works again.

You might want to search the list archive for other posts about
EventManager, as the original implementation was called (shorted,
since I'm not overly fond the of DOM/Java style obsessivelyLongNames
convention). That code has evolved in stages to reach its present
looks. (Understanding all code you use is a good practice that should
be encouraged.)
