Well, this is starting to drift way off topic and into "religious
flame-ware material", so I'll simply state that yes, I'm a vocal
proponent of strongly typed languages. (but concede there may be cases
were this is impractical)
As to COBOL itself, I certainly don't claim it to be "the perfect
language" [you should see the shenanigans I had to pull in order to
perform bit-manipulations... ;) ] but I've found few languages, outside
of maybe direct assembler coding, that will give a programmer a good
understanding of exactly what is happening "in memory" when you declare
a variable... (and knowledge of which is what enabled me to actually
write a bit-manipulation library in COBOL...)
