Which is why I posted what I did.  The sidebar can be immensely
useful, but you may want the space for other things.  Having a
convenient way to expand/contract it, and an increase in the number of
things you can do with it can be a handy thing.

Oh, I concur.  Firefox is the Emacs of browsers.  Some knowledge of
XUL, CSS, and Javascript, and you can make it look like and do pretty
much anything you like.
