With regards to using vi as the editor in a terminal.  My buddy
concocted a method.

Make a shell script:

#!/bin/bash
xterm -e "vi $1"

Of course substitute your favorite terminal, and then make the path
to the script your editor string in about:config.  Works like a champ.
