Go to settings - labels - find gmailskins default label (a bunch of 1's and 0's) and delete it. Then restart gmail and you will see an orange strip at the top that will take you to gmailskins settings page. you can configure skins from there. The only problem is that if you want to change it again you have to repeat the process and start from scratch all over again.
