I'm a Debian fanatic because I love to tinker with my OS, strip it down,
do stuff myself... but for someone who is not as much of a control freak
as me I'd probably recommend Ubuntu. Even though I've never tried it,
they seem to know what they are doing and people seem to be happy with
it. Other choices are Fedora, SUSE and Mandrivia, but I don't like RPMs. :)
