If you wish to install Thunderbird Help, create a Firebird Help XPI from the latest CVS code (http://firebirdhelp.mozdev.org/source.html). Nilson Cain provided some basic Thunderbird documentation, but the documentation is not displayed due to XML Parsing errors (not sure why they are there, because they aren't there in Firebird). Not that I know of. I would implement it myself but I'm not very familiar with the format and not sure if it's binary or not. If you got some information on the format, I'd be happy to maybe consider implementation in a future version of Firebird Help.

--R.J.

It seems that more and more books, e-books and publications on the web are switching from PDF, a good format for printing document to .chm files, a format that was thought for the new help system in MS OS. I think .chm is similar in concept to help system in mozilla but with the advantage that is a compressed HTML  ( maybe what you mean by binary ) format with a minimal footprint. A whole 1000 pages hypermedia book in just 2 MB with index and search capabilities and a pleasure reading in the screen ( many people don't bother if the printing is not that good like in pdf files ). I realized that the Mozilla and Linux-Unix  world in general has not access to this format.

I don't know already the compressed format that use MS, but the information for building an .chm file can be found in:

HTML Help Workshop and Documentation

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=00535334-c8a6-452f-9aa0-d597d16580cc&DisplayLang=en

if the url doesn't work search "HTML Help Workshop" in Microsoft site.

Some ideas about the wrong things about pdf for screen readability can be found in Nealsen web:

 http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20030714.html
 http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20010610.html

¿ What could be the wright direction for the development of maybe a better but compatible help systems in mozilla ?

I don´t know anything about developing in mozilla and the like but I would be happy if I could help.

I can't seem to find it anywhere on disk. I assume that it isn't structured in the Internet Explorer way, where it stores bookmarks as *.url format in \Favourites. How, then do I backup my bookmarks say, before reformatting my system? Are the bookmarks stored in a database of some sort, and if so, how can I retrieve them individually? Another question I have is where Firefox stores my Temporary Internet Files like cookies and webpages. Am I correct to say that it stores it in the Temporary Internet Files folder which is also utilized by Internet Explorer? Are there other places which it stores user information? Thanks. (C:\Documents and Settings\[Windows Login Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\[profile name]\[random string].slt) Cookies are stored in a file called 'cookies.txt' same directory. Temporary internet files are stored in a subdirectory named 'Cache' in the same directory. All other user information is stored in that same directory. Mazzel, Martijn.
