I have found a bug when opening Firefox with Prefething Enabled. When loading generally more than 1 pages on Firefox start it crashes. It takes up about 99% CPU power and won't do anything. I use sessionsaver and restart firefox -extensions also, please notice this. I have about 15 pages saved in sessionsaver, if I restart Firefox then it crashes. After that I have to clear the session to make things work. This is a bug considering Prefetching, I tried this with Prefetching enabled/disabled. With Enabled, it bugs. Maybe there should be a tighter limit for open connections or a waiting-time for Fasterfox upon start. Please fix this issue, it is in 1.0.2 version also (latest when writing this message). -- Markus Brummer Student From misterdan3isme at yahoo.com Mon Jan 2 13:21:09 2006 From: misterdan3isme at yahoo.com (Daniel Davis) Date: Sat Jan 14 20:03:58 2006 Subject: [Fasterfox] Fasterfox question, disabling website Message-ID: <20060102212109.28359.qmail@web33108.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Skipped content of type multipart/alternative-------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I wonder if by changing the Fast back to any number besides -1 or 0, it will truley have the effect desired (fast forwards and fast backwards) since it is making changes to about:config keys that are no longer used by Fx 1.5 and above. I really like it. I noticed that some people are all in a huff about the prefetching feature. Something you might consider in the future is to have an option where instead of prefetching all links, a person could drag a link/s down to the Fasterfox icon one after another to only prefetch those links. I'm sure most people don't visit every link on a page but as they are reading the page they've probably seen some links they know they will be clicking on. You could drag one or more links down to the icon and when you were ready just click the link you originally dragged to be prefetched and.........boom, there it is. I've been looking for something that would do this for awhile with no luck. Years ago there used to be a program that did this but its long gone now. So at least you know it's been done before. I think implementing something like this would stop all the crying about prefetching using too much bandwidth and maybe it would be a good thing anyways. Anyhow, I am happy with your extension and just thought I would drop you my thoughts. Thanks for the great program and keep up the good work! I have done some research on a certain setting in Firefox: "network.http.pipelining.firstrequest" and I have found that that code was removed from Firefox as it was no longer needed or picked up in the code when using Firefox. It might be something worth removing since it's not used anyway. Just thought I'd let you know. I've tested with and without the setting and the speed is the same. Somewhat ironically this actually increases the total time rendering a webpage, as explained by Asa Dotzler: Setting the initial paint delay at 0, may get you some content on the screen faster, but it's worth noting that it will dramatically slow down the time it takes the entire page to display. Here's what's going on. Gecko, Firefox's rendering engine, is trying to optimize between the cost of waiting for a bit more data versus doing more painting and reflows as new data comes in. Waiting a bit longer before it starts painting the page gives Gecko a chance to receive more content before chewing up CPU cycles to render and reflow the document. If you drop this value down to 0 or near 0, that means you'll see the page start displaying a bit earlier, but not having received much data in that short interval, you'll have a lot more paint and reflow cycles to complete rendering of the page. So if you don?t care about overall rendering time then yes, setting this to 0 can result in some content being displayed immediately. ------------------------- just want to point that out :) and thanks for making FF so easy to tweak! great ext. larry From dmstewart at sympatico.ca Sun Jan 8 02:37:44 2006 From: dmstewart at sympatico.ca (David Stewart) Date: Sat Jan 14 20:04:07 2006 Subject: [Fasterfox] Installing Problem with 1.0.2 Message-ID: <43C0C148.1040801@sympatico.ca> I'm having problems installing the update for Fasterfox, 1.0.2. I attempted to install 1.0.2 over 1.0.1 and, while it downloaded and installed, it did not update. Rather it created a new extension for itself in Extensions. However, I cannot chose it to either do anything with option or uninstall it. I reinstalled 1.0.1 and re-installed 1.0.2. The program almost installs - I see it at the bottom of the extensions list and it reads " Install completed successfully". However, there's another pop-up that reads as follows: *"Firefox could not install the file at http://mozdev.sweetooth.org/fasterfox/fasterfox-1.0.2-fx.xpi because download error. [click] OK*. The new version at the bottom of the extensions list is removed and installation doesn't occur. Is there a conflict between the version 1.0.2 that's semi installed but doesn't run, and the new attempted download? How do I get the current version out and successfully download and run the new version? I've tried looking for it but can't find it anywhere to manually remove. Ever since Fasterfox version 1.0.1, Firefox slows down or stops with a warning that a script is unresponsive and do I want to stop it or let it run. It only happens while loading pages with lots of links if I have prefetching enabled. The best example I've found is thehun.com (*Warning lots of porn links.*) I do have lots of other extensions, but the problem goes away if I disable prefetching (or Fasterfox.) I also run a third party (optimized) build of Firefox, although I doubt that's the problem. Something else I'm not sure of is the FastBack entry the newer Fasterfox adds in the about:config. It seems Fasterfox changes browser.sessionhistory.max_viewers, but in the current Firefox there is already a listing for browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers, which seems to (maybe?) be the actual setting. I've included a list of extensions, etc. I currently have, if it will help with the problem. I assume the problem I'm having might be the same problem other people are having with some of the "freezes" or "hangs" from the Bugzilla page. If there is anything else you need from me, let me know. And, thanks for an excellent extension! Having been a truly major fan of firefox for a year or so, some time last week I downloaded your new fasterfox 1.0.1. Rather quickly, I discovered some irritating features which interfered with my typical online flow (most notably the pop up blocker which I found very intrusive). Within a day or two, I was sufficiently put off and decided to uninstall the new program....and I did so. At least I thought I did. The problem is that the pop blocker feature I'd found so touchy/over-reactive appears not to have been removed along with the program. Can you please advise why I might still be experiencing this problem when I cannot seem to find any discernible vestiges of fasterfox still on my laptop? Thanks. If something went wrong in the uninstall that caused this preference not to be set back to the default, you may revert to the default setting by following these steps: 1. Type "about:config" into the location bar and hit enter 2. Search for the above mentioned preference, "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" 3. Double click the entry 4. Set it to zero, "0" 5. Restart Firefox. If this preference either does not exist or is already set to 0, then some other program beside Fasterfox is causing the behavior you describe below. Please let me know how this works out. I already checked the sourcecode and the mailing list's archive, but I did not find any information about how fastback is implemented. Just found some lines in the options menu, but no functionality. To come to the point, I would like to change fastback to server also generic pages. I love this feature at Opera and I would also like to have it on Firefox. Could you give me any hints how I could implement this or where I can find the code that provides the original fastback functionality? -- Thanks in advance, Christian mailto:fasterfox@christian-hufgard.de From Owen.Boyle at swx.com Mon Jan 30 13:01:21 2006 From: Owen.Boyle at swx.com (Boyle Owen) Date: Mon Jan 30 07:01:56 2006 Subject: [Fasterfox] RE: Abusing sites with pre-fetching Message-ID: Greetings, I'd like to agree with Piotr on this one. It is a bit presumptious nowadays to assume that a URL ending in ".html" is static. On Cocoon-based sites, it is quite normal for URL extensions to be programmed to match the MIME-type and for them to have no connection to the method used to generate the content. Further, his point about FF hitting hidden trap URLs that block the user is absolutely valid. We have confirmed reports of this happening and it is very annoying for non-IT users who don't know why they are suddenly blocked from our site. I can't agree with Ben's search for the middle-ground: At the end of the day, FF *is* a robot and so absolutely *should* obey robots.txt. If this is done properly then webmasters will repay your honesty by Disallowing only those areas which must not be prefetched. Otherwise, you risk that a lot of robots.txt files just contain: User-agent: Fasterfox Disallow: / Even worse, javascript pop-ups telling the user to de-install FF, or switch to "another" browser... I have a question about prefetching. I haven't tried it yet because I wonder how it interacts with Google Web Accelerator. Both prefetches pages. I suppose that they won't make each other crash or anything but perhaps they will cancel each other out making the net effect worse. I suppose that since I'm using Google Web Accelerator I have little use for prefetching in Fasterfox but I thought I might just as well as you guys. Thanks again for a cool extension. Before the new update for Fasterfox came out (1.0.3 version), I downloaded the 1.0.1 version from the Mozilla website. In one of the comments, I read that if I went to you website, I could download version 1.0.2. And so I did and installed it. It installed it as a separate extension called "fasterfox-1.0.2-fx.xpi". Now that 1.0.3 is out, I have no use for the 1.0.2 version being installed as a separate extension; however, I can't seem to uninstall that particular extension like how I could uninstall any other extension. Can you help me get this deleted? Thank you. -Josh _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! If i was a dev i'd help make it..but i'm only an 18 year old aspiring web designer. btw..thanks for the kickass plugin! While I'm using FasterFox with the "turbo charged" setting, I have sometimes issue while uploading files which are bigger than 200ko ( maybe because of my slow connection, 128k ). The tab freeze while it's uplading and I can't do anything else. I have only uploaded to a forum, a Invision Powerboard, and it works when I set FasterFox to default. I didn't try any other setting; but when I upload a file, sometimes a pop up saying time extented or something like that will apear several times; I have to click on continue so that the file is uploaded properly, and it doesn't always work. Is there any fix for it? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <000601c62221$6b4f1d90$70af4418@OWNER4ILK49AQS> Hi! I would like to know why my version of Fasterfox is freezing every time I start Firefox? I downloaded the Fasterfox program so that it would make my surfing faster. Now, it's made my surfing even slower then Internet Explorer. It doesn't matter what startup page I use, the Firefox browser using Fasterfox is definitely slow. Most of the time, it can take up to one minute for the startup page to load up, like it did now while I was writing this e-mail. Also, if this continues, how can I delete the Fasterfox program? Thanks. Mr. Sasha Grasa -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
