Hello,
I work for a very large scale hosting providor, and we provide support for a
plethora of online businesses. Alot of them use phpBB and other web BB
applications on their sites, and I can't tell you how many times a ton of
their users start wondering why they are getting no connection from the web
server, or the web admins wondering why their BBs are crashing their
database servers trying to fill normal traffic. Not only does it come
across looking like a small scale HTTP zombie attack in such instances, alot
of times the admins just get fed up with it and start banning IPs via
iptables or their hardware firewall.
I appreciate your earnest efforts in trying to improve web browsing in
general, but this is not the way to do it IMHO. This being an open source
project people can abuse such code (Not to say that I'm against open source
in the least) and take out what safeguards you have put in to prevent
against this abuse, some probably trying to do their own honest web browsing
improvement project. Anyway, I just hope these thoughts have come into
consideration on your team and appreciate you taking the time to hear me
voice my opinion.
