I don't consider the former stupidity.  I consider it a momentary lapse
of attention.

Exactly.  People make mistakes, and it's only reasonable to try to catch
the mistakes where possible.  But it's not productive to try to create a
world safe for people who simply go through their lives never thinking
before they act.
