In fact, the entire 1.4.x tree works fine on Vista as long as you either 
(a) relocate some executables or (b) never need to use helper programs 
such as gpgkeys.

Advanced users can use anything in 1.4.x on Vista.  Beginners should 
definitely rely only on 1.4.8.
