Great points, John.
The focus of my post was that in the "Sometimes
pgp armor unrecognized" post, the discussion was
about using the WebMail add-in for downloading
email, and (I would assume) sending email as well.
My post was merely to point out that TBird 2.0.0.9
users have GMail support built-in... that they
have no need for "localhost" server settings using
the WebMail GMail add-in to replace support already
included in TBird.
I passed on the "auto" settings, in case the WebMail
user wanted to use the direct connection to GMail...
instead of WebMail... an add-in which I was
inconsistently using, and replaced (for Yahoo Mail
downloads) with FreePops.
FreePOPs also supports GMail, although FreePOPs
does not have a "send" protocol implemented.
GMail can be sent via a direct-connect to an SMTP
server at Gmail --
~ Server smtp.gmail.com
~ Port 587
~ Userid <depends>
~ SecConn TLS
Again, this is auto-config'd when you choose GMail
from the New Account Wizard in Thunderbird.
Peace,
Barry Smith

| Yes, food for thought; but the actual Gmail Account is still being used
| for both the Email Address and the repository for messages until they
| are retrieved. Within the Gmail Web Interface there is a setting to
| turn OFF HTML coding. I do not believe that Portable T-Bird actually
| alters any settings within the Gmail Account. It mere takes care of the
| necessary settings within T-Bird [Ports, SSL] that are necessary for
| connecting to it.
|
| One must still manually visit the Gmail Account and configure what
| format messages are retrieved in & if Gmail's SMTP Server are utilized,
| what format they leave Gmail's Server in. ;) Also, the Gmail Account
| Settings must be configured for retrieval as well. Are retrieved
| messages to be deleted from the Inbox but stored on the Gmail Server for
| later 'Searching', etc.
