[Enigmail] Can enigmail work with HTML messages in Thunderbird?

Last year I installed GPG4Win and then enigmail into Thunderbird.
At the time I was told to set up TB for plaintext *only* because
otherwise enigmail would not work.

But this creates lots of problems with reading normal
(unencrypted/unsigned) messages that are in HTML format because often I
see only the raw HTML code....

So now I wonder if Enigmail has progressed such that it can handle HTML
and that I do not have to limit TB to plaintext only?

Or is there a setting that allows me to read/compose HTML and still use
enigmail to encrypt or sign the messages (still in HTML)?

I am not a frequent user of either enigmail or Thunderbird, except
during summer time.
