Hi Steve,
Sorry, I made an error with the step sequence.
Ignore step 5 and restart the browser after step 4.

i.e.,
1. Go to the "about:config" panel. (Just type "about:config" in the location
bar and press <enter>.)
2. Type, "browser.search.searchbox.width" in the textbox inside that panel.
3. Only one entry should appear in the list. Double click on it.
4. Type a new size number like 120. Then restart the browser.
