Go to: Copy URL + :: Firefox Add-ons https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/129 [The above was from "Copy URL +" by the way, as an example of recursion :-) ] 2. Login, or register and login 3. Click on the link named "Ignore version check" 4. The "Add to Firefox" box will turn green. 5. Install the extension. 6. Optionally save the extension, which is available at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/553/copy_url_-1.3.2-fx+mz.xpi Note that this extension or add-on is now classified as experimental and so possibly has not passed through all the hoops. Nevertheless, it has worked solidly for me, just as before. Your mileage might vary: so please be warned. So, here is the revised algorithm: 1. 5. Open a new tab and type "about:config" in the "awesome bar" or "URL text box". Then, type "Compatibility" in the Filter box of the page that appears. You will see: extensions.checkCompatibility and its value will be "true". Right click on the value to "Toggle" it to "false". 6. Install the Copy URL + extension. 7. Optionally save the extension, which is available at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/553/copy_url_-1.3.2-fx+mz.xpi 8. Again go to "about:config" and again toggle the value of extensions.checkCompatibility to its original value of "true". 9. Restart Firefox to start using Copy URL + Note that this extension or add-on is classified as experimental and so possibly has not passed through all the hoops. Hence the compatibility workaround. Nevertheless, it has worked solidly for me, just as before. Your mileage might vary: so please be warned. Just to confirm the correctness of what I last sent, I went through the steps myself and lost the use of Copy URL + ! I suspect that the steps worked with FF-3.0b5 and somehow passed through the upgrade to FF-3.0, but they do not properly work when re-installed in FF-3.0. Nevertheless, I have got Copy URL + working again by editing the install.rdf file in the downloaded .xpi file, according to the instructions at: Editing an add-on to change its compatibility - MozillaZine Knowledge Base http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_an_add-on_to_change_its_compatibility My renamed extension has the filename copy_url_-1.3.2-hacked-for-ff3-fx+mz.xpi and it can be installed in FF-3.0 simply by opening it and clicking "Install Now" on the popup. It now works now with "extensions.checkCompatibility" set to "true". I also realized that the "extensions.checkCompatibility" string is not available by default. So, if you need to set it up, please see: Extensions.checkCompatibility - MozillaZine Knowledge Base http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions.checkCompatibility and Updating add-ons - MozillaZine Knowledge Base http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_add-ons That said, once you have fixed the compatibility in the install.rdf file, you do not need to bother with setting up "extensions.checkCompatibility" in the first place. Finally, this is a hack and might harbour unknown bugs. So, please follow all listed recommendations at the above links. Caveat executor! I do an incredible amount of web research and writing. But the extension is in dire need of an active developer/maintainer. It is not just the Firefox 3 version clash; we went through the same thing in the transition from Firefox 1.x to 2.x. Phillip obviously does not have the time to continue developing and maintaining the extension. Moreover, the extension would be far more useful to far more people if it were itself extended. E.g., -- A GUI dialog for creating customizations and arranging extension menu items in a hierarchical fashion (my set of menu items for the extension is nearly a full screen's depth). Right now, creating customizations is for geeks only; -- EOL settings automatically selected for the environment in which the instance of Firefox is installed; -- An option to write an assembled clip as a Firefox bookmark with keywords and a description rather than just stuffing the environment's clipboard. -- A history optional setting that not only writes to the environment's clipboard but also writes to a history file that can be set for an optional number of clips to be stored on a first-in/first out basis. (Garbling a clip through an edit of the file copied to remains a pain, requiring relocation of the page from which the clip was assembled and reprocessing with the extension.) -- A richer vocabulary for the customizations; e.g., ---- Markup for a parser that translates the environment's date/time stamp into date only for "last visited on [date]" citations required by many writing stylebooks;. ---- Markup to grab and process a web page's HTML meta keywords; ---- Markup to grab and process a web page's HTML meta description; ---- Markup to extract and format citations from those embedded literature data base pages (see e.g., the Zotero extension at ); It would also be helpful if a better system could be created for user exchange of customizations, e.g., an RDBMS repository of customizations that users can post their customizations to along with short descriptions of their functionality and metadata for classification of them. E.g., I have customizations for HTML, XHTML, Tikiwiki, MediaWiki, BB markup, and my own instance of extended Drupal 5.x that include some markup unique to the Drupal extensions I use. In summary, CopyURL+ is very useful for geeks but immature for everyone else. It also has incredible potential to be made far more useful for everyone. I don't have the necessary skills myself, but it would really be wonderful if someone with the right skills might consider taking over responsibility for its maintenance and further development.
