[Companion] problem getting companion bar to work in user account

I installed version 0.5.4 from the companion.mozdev.org web site while 
logged on as root and the toolbar works fine in the root account but 
when I tried to get it to work in my user account, I got nothing. I 
changed the permissions on the yahootoolbar.jar file to r--r--r-- and 
now i get a toolbar line but nothing no icons. It is just blank. I have 
just started working with Linux so it would help if the answer addressed 
a total newbie.
