[Companion] Blank Alerts Button

For about a week now, where the bell icon used to be
to show me i had knew mail, an alerts button has been
there.  when i click it if it has new mail, it shows
how many knew mails i have.  but when i don't have
knew mail, it shows a little blank box.  I am running
firefox 1.0 on windows 2000 sp4 with companion 0.5.4. 
I have attached a screenshot with the blank box.  any
help would be appreciated.
