I can't think of a reason why extension installation would fail - is
this problem also occurring when you try to install other extensions?
I've never had to edit the xpinstall.enabled preference during testing
of Clippings, or during the course of regular Firefox use, with
extensions other than Clippings.
I would suggest seeking help in the MozillaZine forums, as the folks
there are more knowledgeable and probably the best people to ask.
