Re-read Jennifer's question and my response. The issue isn't about
whether or not a file can be written. The issue is being able to use
(i.e., access clippings, add clippings, make changes) the *same*
Clippings data source between the two apps. At least, that is how I
understood Jennifer's question.

The way I understood Jennifer's inquiry, she wanted to be able to
create Clippings data in Thunderbird, and then be able to access and
use that same data in Firefox, without having to perform import and
export between the two apps. The scenario in which the same Clippings
data is accessible by Firefox and Thunderbird, with both apps possibly
open at the same time, is perfectly reasonable from an end user's
point of view, contrary to what you suggest.
