I had great plans for adding new features to Adblock but it seems I just cannot find the time to implement them. And the chances are shrinking that I'll ever find the time. So here are my ideas, and I hope that at least some of them will excite others and someday will be implemented. So my basic idea is (like Apache SpamAssassin) a scoring system. On the webpage the entire ruleset is applied to every blockable item. Matching rules give a score to the item and finaly all scores are added together for the item. If the final score exceeds a given threshold, the item is considered as an advertisement and blocked. A negative score works like whitelisting, a high positive score results in automatic blocking. The user should be able to adjust the threshold and the individual scores. Metarules could be created with a logical expression that contain other rules. And now some of my rule ideas. They could be useful even without the above. * Item URL domain is not the same as the webpage's. (this is not evil in itself but combined with the following...), * item is a frame, * item is a script, * item is a flash object, * item is an image and has a specific size, * item has URL domain or subdomain that is listed in blacklist (e.g. both cnn.122.2o7.net and 2o7.net matching the rule 2o7.net), * item has an URL which contains the backward reference URL of the main page (e.g. on page A I click on a link that brings me to page B - here the advertiser with an embedded object C receives the URL "A"; this is a serios attack against my privacy) * o yes, and item URL matches a given pattern :) Thanks for listening. /Ervin From trev at gtchat.de Wed Jun 7 01:23:06 2006 From: trev at gtchat.de (Wladimir Palant) Date: Wed Jun 7 01:07:17 2006 Subject: [AdblockPlus] Re: wishlist: regulars in obj hiding In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4486004A.1040000@gtchat.de> Sergey wrote: > PLZ.... > > its stupid to make > > rbcdaily.ru#div(banner) > rbcdaily.ru#div(copyright) > rbcdaily.ru#div(forum) > rbcdaily.ru#div(lbotmenu) > rbcdaily.ru#div(link) > rbcdaily.ru#div(logo) > rbcdaily.ru#div(menu) > rbcdaily.ru#div(title) > rbcdaily.ru#td(class=right) > > instead of ONE rule. Even if it is correct, note that using full addresses will not work in most cases - the address changes every time you reload the page. Not only that adblockplus does not work for users not having write permissions to adblockplus' files, it tends to let Mozilla hang on startup. You can simply deactivate Adblock and then reload the page to have all formerly blocked content shown. Easiest way to do that is by setting the extensions.adblockplus.enable_key entry in about:config to "Accel Shift A". Then you only have to press Alt+Shift+A to enable/disable Adblock. You can also deactivate Adblock from the menu, but if you need to do it often, the method above is faster. If this really is Mozilla 1.7 (or SeaMonkey), then http://bugzilla.mozdev.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13273 should be the issue here. You should set correct file permissions manually for the following files in the application directory: - chrome/adblockplus.jar - components/nsAdblockPlus.js - default/pref/adblockplus.js Also see this announcement: http://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=554 Wladimir From hiedran.the.first at gmail.com Sun Jun 18 23:27:29 2006 From: hiedran.the.first at gmail.com (Hiedran) Date: Mon Jun 19 05:46:14 2006 Subject: [AdblockPlus] Flash ads embedded in javascript Message-ID: <449627B1.8@gmail.com> As far as I can tell, espn.com sometimes displays Flash ads that are embedded inside their javascript. The annoying thing here is that site functionality is contained in the same script, so blocking flash.js on the page doesn't work. I've tried looking at the page source to see if I could get the .swf file and block the URL, but after forcing a refresh, the same ad loads again. I could be mistaken and I'm trying to block the wrong thing, but I really suspect that ESPN has found (for now) a way around the script blockers. Please CC me as I'm not on the mailing list. The one thing I can't figure out how to do, however, is to select elements based on attributes where the attribute's value has a special character. For example, I would like to block elements like:
I've tried this: example.net#div(style*=border: 1px dotted #999999;) But it doesn't work when I add the "#999999;", presumably because the special character "#" is messing up the parsing of the rule. I've also tried putting the value in quotes, using % escapes, using backslash ('\') escapes, and various other things to no avail. Is there some way to escape these special characters? Or is there a better way to go about matching style characteristics? For web sites that don't use CSS element IDs and classes, what I really want is some way to match on CSS attributes, like color, border, etc. Using CSS selectors (the "##" syntax) is unfortunately not useful for this purpose, so I find myself using a lot of #*(style*=...) rules. If you look at this element in DOM inspector, you will see: style="border: 1px dotted rgb(153, 153, 153);" That's because the style attribute is special, it is actually the style JavaScript-property serialized. And the serialized form isn't necessarily what was there in the HTML code before (though it is equivalent). So you could for example use this rule (parentheses are in fact an issue): example.net#div(style*=border: 1px dotted)(style*=153, 153, 153) Wladimir From mazieres-k3nw6mkfvwnifq4xy3xcxwpyes at temporary-address.scs.stanford.edu Sun Jun 25 11:37:19 2006 From: mazieres-k3nw6mkfvwnifq4xy3xcxwpyes at temporary-address.scs.stanford.edu (David Mazieres (address expires 22 Sep 2006)) Date: Sun Jun 25 15:19:16 2006 Subject: [AdblockPlus] Hiding elements with special characters in attribute values In-Reply-To: <449E6336.3060308@gtchat.de> (Wladimir Palant's message of "Sun, 25 Jun 2006 12:19:34 +0200") References: <449E6336.3060308@gtchat.de> Message-ID: Wladimir Palant writes: > No, that's not the reason.
