Some weeks ago I did not know what DIVs were, with all the discussions I learned it and tried to use RIP with ABP 0.6. I now think DIV can be convenient in some situations (always in a per site basis), even really dangerous if used without control. You now you have decided to implement some kind of "controlled DIV blocking", perhaps you could consider this. If you test any of these sites (Spanish P2P sites): www.elitedivx.com www.estrenosdivx.com you will see the very agressive adbox, you have to click it in order to close it. And when you enter in the site (press ENTRAR) it appears in every page. You cannot block it, but can block the ad inside it and remove the box with RIP (perhaps with some javascript or css, but too far from my possibilities). With RIP I could remove the box (after some recursive tries, because it is made up of some nested DIVs), but RIP finds and filters the DIV "from a fixed position" (bad described, I hope it can be understood), and when using the filter in the subpages it did not work (div position was different). I found a solution checking HTML (all boxes have id="postit") and it works in different sites with the same ad. But this solution is too complicated for most users, specially if they do not understand English (explanations about XPATH and HTML). I was wondering if it would be possible a DIV identification process and filter generation starting from an ads link (localized by adblock and selected in sidebar by user) and then looking for nested DIVS containing the ad, or some reference (id, or similar) of DIVs containing it. But this kind of solution (with some GUI interface) would more linked to ABP than to RIP (since it would imply a filter generation from the ad, not from the position or characteristics of the DIV). Probably I have been too long and confusing, but if you have been able of understanding which I tried to express, at least I hope you can think about it. "Mark the element" is done the same way as for unblocked elements - by flashing a red border around them. The shift+strg-combination is rare enough imo to justify three shortcuts (B=elements,A=en/disable,F=flash overlay) as Adblock is a popular extension. > "Overlay flash" isn't there, old code was simply too problematic. > http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq.html#objects lists ways to block > objects, re-adding something similar to "overlay flash" is being > considered. I don't absolutely need the overlay, but being able to determine the URL of a flash so easy and optionally block it was nice. Currently you have to go to the options menu and enable tabs to do so (i have them disabled by default for the looks). Maybe having strg+shift+f (yes, I love shortcuts) showing the tabs on flash is possible? Then it'd be almost the same functionality as before but without any overlay code needed. >> - make it possible to temporary remove certain elements by clicking >> while holding a shortcut > > Reasoning? I was using it, don't know how I found out though... :) It's good if a site has annoying ads, but you don't want a lasting filter as it might interfere with other sites. The problem is, I have two entries now, one for Adblock, one for the updater. The Adblock entry is rather useless as you can access it through the statusbar/toolbar as well. Too many extensions add an entry to the menu, so it clusters up. There is nothing special about these files, it is regular CSS. CSS2 allows to do pretty nice things like the attribute selector I used (http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/selector.html#attribute-selectors) - matching the menu item by the value of its key attribute. You usually don't use it on the web because IE doesn't support them, but here it isn't a problem. There is also some Mozilla-specific CSS that can be used: http://www.xulplanet.com/references/elemref/ref_StyleProperties.html userChrome.css gets applied to all chrome content (application's user interface). userContent.css will be applied to the web pages you visit. Unless you want to dig into XUL files defining the user interface (it is overlay.xul inside adblockplus.jar in this case by the way) DOM Inspector can help you. I tested DIV blocking with this filter and works OK (even it seems faster than RIP, I cannot even see the adbox). But how could I change the DIV filter #*(postit) so only aplies to selected sites (pages and subpages)? I tried to configure the filter but I havent been able. Reason: I only want to use DIV blocking when it is really the only available option (like this example, because the adbox covered the text), and having a generic DIV filter which can screw up or slow down any page looks like a blind man with a gun. I tried something like www.elitedivx.com*#*(postit) but no way. The second thing I also tried to explain in my previous mail (with my difficult English and my lack of programming knowledge) was the possibility of DIV/element blocking filters based on the detection of a banner/page address (i.e *publicidad\casino*) contained in the DIV, but as you say in the FAQ, probably this should be managed by a different extension, similar to RIP but based on ad detection. You won't be able to see it because it doesn't even appear with this approach. > But how could I change the DIV filter #*(postit) so only aplies to > selected sites (pages and subpages)? You can't. That's part of the reason why it is "minimal support". It could be done better, with much more flexible filters and user interface helping create them. But it is really out of scope of Adblock, it should be a separate extension installing on top of Adblock Plus. And as I explained in http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq.html#divblock, there is no problem writing the code, but I don't want to be the one maintaining it. > Reason: I only want to use DIV blocking when it is really the only > available option (like this example, because the adbox covered the > text), and having a generic DIV filter which can screw up or slow down > any page looks like a blind man with a gun. I tried something like > www.elitedivx.com*#*(postit) but no way. All you can do is combining tag name with id like this: #div(postit) And then just hope such a combination doesn't occur on other pages. That's still better than using DIV blocking in Adblock Plus 0.5 - that one made me a page completely unusable because its web address contained /ad/ and I had a filter that matched this (it was in no way meant for DIV blocking). > The second thing I also tried to explain in my previous mail (with my > difficult English and my lack of programming knowledge) was the > possibility of DIV/element blocking filters based on the detection of a > banner/page address (i.e *publicidad\casino*) contained in the DIV, but > as you say in the FAQ, probably this should be managed by a different > extension, similar to RIP but based on ad detection. Found the problem - what is actually loading in this frame is https://www.yehua.org/firefox/topbanner.php and this one can be blocked. This page is redirected to english.jobchina.net - that's why ABP is showing the wrong address for the frame in the sidebar. Needs to be fixed... Maybe you could remove the strg+shift+a shortcut if absolutely necessary. Well, it seems people do use it. And they are complaining that it conflicts with Web Developer extension. So: no, I didn't decide what to do with this yet. I don't think the conflict with web developer is critical, cause you can just assign a new letter to validate locale page in the options of web developer. E.g. I changed it to ctrl+shift+v. I event think that this fits better. ;-) Calain From mp3geek at gmail.com Fri Feb 10 21:40:29 2006 From: mp3geek at gmail.com (mp3geek) Date: Fri Feb 10 03:41:30 2006 Subject: [AdblockPlus] Adblock Plus 0.6.1 released In-Reply-To: <43E77568.1020909@gtchat.de> References: <43E77568.1020909@gtchat.de> Message-ID: very impressed with it, its fast, and the subscription service works nicely. I have tried a lot of things and changes in the adblock options and settings, and unfortunately, I have not been able to restore its previous behaviour. This issue can be solved if you check "Use small icons" in the Customize Toolbar window - it will change the size for every icon however. There is nothing special about the bookmarks toolbar that would indicate that you always have to use small icons with it. And I don't think that making an exception for this toolbar would be a good thing - somebody might have moved several of his icons to the bookmarks and then these icons would be large, not the ABP icon however. For this I have some ideas. First, I would be pleased, if it would give an option, which tests and counts all filters. Currently - according to FAQ - Adblock will only go through the list of filters until it finds one that matches. With the activated new option it would be possible to find all filters which may work but will never be chosen because an other filter matches first. With that possibility I could optimize the filter list. Second, I do not need the tooltip "Adblock plus ist aktiviert, klicken Sie hier, um ...." of the adblock icon. I would prefer, if tooltip says "Adblock plus blocks 12 items with 4 filters." And third, I hope you plan an overall statistic. So I can impress others with the info about the blocked links, pictures, scripts, .. and so on. Perhaps you can use one of my ideas. Regards, Dennis -- Telefonieren Sie schon oder sparen Sie noch? Installation: http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/installation.html Major changes: * Fixed potential memory leaks * Fixed several frame-related issues * Number of supported languages is now 16 * Allowed blocking of background images via context menu Detailed changelog: http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/changelog-0.6.1.1.html From CarolynMcghee at allstartees.com Tue Feb 14 07:32:25 2006 From: CarolynMcghee at allstartees.com (Helen Miranda) Date: Mon Feb 13 23:20:44 2006 Subject: [AdblockPlus] Microsoft Re: OEM Windows, Office XP, & Photoshop on s8le Now Message-ID: An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You can customize many parts of Firefox, but not in the options manu, chrome editting you go. While this may seem widely customizable to developers like you guys, I think that many people would find it hard or taking too much time to do these. I can do that, but I think Adblock Plus 0.6 would be better if some edits are made. By reading http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq_customization.html, I found that the status bar icon customization is an area that Adblock Plus 0.5 beats 0.6 in. In Adblock 0.5, there are choices the user can choose for the status icon. I think that it would be better too if 0.6 decides to add that part in. Perhaps in the preferrences>options, there could be a new selection "Customize icon...", which will open a new window with lists of icons or even browse for icon customized by user if need be. (I found the "AD" icon in 0.5 exaclty what I want. I see you don't like the idea of having AD as the icon though, Palant.) Furthermore, why did you guys decide to discontinue the dragging icon in status bar? I am sure that is not hard. Although it is not used often, why remove it if it is possible and implemented? PS. First day using 0.6 here, kinda impressed by how much simpler it is. =D -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nope. See http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq_project.html#options People who want to customize the icon usually are power users and can easily follow the instructions in http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq_customization.html. The others don't need it. Should I do something similar > for Adblock Plus? Somebody asked already. I must say - I have no idea, you really should ask the people who wrote this warning. At the very least they should be able to give a testcase. In general: Adblock attaches data to the objects, that's the only reason I can think of why it causes this problem. Adblock Plus 0.6+ doesn't do this any more (it doesn't touch the objects at all), so it should fine - unless the problem is something else of course. On the Yahoo email page, on the right, is typically an advert. It suffices to block the advert and re-download the page to find the same advert pop up. Meaning, Yahoo changes the address of the advert automatically in order to side track the adblock filter. I wouldn't know how to employ a wildcard to generalize the filter ... and I am not exactly a novice to HTML. If that can work, I suggest that you explain VERY PLAINLY how to do it. Or, offer a means for doing it automatically. Regards, --------------------------------- Nouveau : t?l?phonez moins cher avec Yahoo! Messenger ! And so far they aren't doing anything against Adblock (Plus), they simply want to show you different ads whenever you load a page. I use http://*.yimg.com/*.yimg.com/a/* - this seems to block all Yahoo ads. > I wouldn't know how to employ a wildcard to generalize the filter ... Well, you look at a few ad addresses: http://eur.a1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/a/eu/any/yahoomailgsp.gif http://eur.a1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/a/de/any/dkb/mailbutton25x251.gif ... Then you decide - what are the common parts in the ads? And you replace everything that can change by *. You have to be a little careful here: Yahoo uses similar addresses for ads and regular images, your shouldn't remove /a/ from your filter. But as Adblock uses "regular expression" filters (search google for how to use that) you can easily create very powerful filter rules. That has nothing to do with HTML though. You needn't go through the hassle to create your own filters. Simply go here: www.pierceive.com and get the Filterset.G, this is a list of filters. It blocks almost all ads for me and gets updated constantly.
